Hakka Houses Restoration

In 2016, the Hong Kong Jockey Club sponsored the revitalization and restoration of the Hakka houses, combined with relevant activities to make Lai Chi Wo village an experiential learning base. 2017 witnessed the beginning of the restoration of the Lai Chi Wo Village compound, and the whole project is expected to be completed by 2022.

Overall restoration principles

1.    The original village setting should be preserved.
2.    The roofscape of Lai Chi Wo should be maintained as much as possible. Individual roofs should be carefully repaired using compatible materials and design.
3.    Make new provisions as necessary for building services, such as fire services system, fresh water supply, drainage system, etc., to facilitate adaptive reuse of the village houses. The new installations should be as discreet as possible.
4.    The individual character of each village house should be respected when deciding on the detailed restoration works, alterations and additions to existing building fabrics
